Student Direct Stream (SDS) – Fast-Track Study Permit Program

The Student Direct Stream (SDS) was a Canadian study permit process created to provide faster and more streamlined processing for eligible international students from selected countries.

The program focused on applicants who demonstrated strong financial capacity, upfront compliance, and language ability, allowing Canadian immigration authorities to process applications more efficiently than the standard study permit stream.

Overview of the Student Direct Stream

The Student Direct Stream was designed to:

  • Reduce study permit processing times
  • Improve application quality and completeness
  • Prioritize applicants with strong documentation and financial proof

Eligible SDS applications were often processed within 20 calendar days, making it one of Canada’s fastest study permit pathways.

Who the SDS Program Was For

The Student Direct Stream applied to legal residents of specific countries, including:

  • Antigua and Barbuda
  • Brazil
  • China
  • Colombia
  • Costa Rica
  • India
  • Morocco
  • Pakistan
  • Peru
  • Philippines
  • Senegal
  • Trinidad and Tobago
  • Vietnam

Applicants were required to be residing in their country of citizenship or legal residence at the time of application.

Key Eligibility Requirements Under SDS

Applicants were required to submit a complete upfront study permit application, including:

  • Letter of Acceptance from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI)
  • Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL), unless exempt
  • Proof of an upfront medical examination
  • Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) of CAD $20,635

Study permit requirements overview:

Accepted Language Tests

Applicants had to meet minimum language thresholds using one of the following:

  • IELTS Academic or General Training – minimum 6.0 in each skill
  • CELPIP General – minimum CLB 7
  • CAEL – minimum score 60
  • PTE Academic – minimum score 60
  • TOEFL iBT – minimum score 83

Strong language ability was a core requirement of the SDS program.

Approval and Entry to Canada

Approved applicants received:

  • A Letter of Introduction (Port of Entry letter)
  • A Temporary Resident Visa (TRV), if required

The Letter of Introduction was presented to a Canadian border officer upon arrival. The physical study permit was issued at the port of entry.

SDS vs Standard Study Permit

The main differences between SDS and the standard study permit process included:

  • Faster processing times
  • Higher upfront documentation requirements
  • Restricted eligibility based on country of residence

Applicants who did not qualify under SDS applied through the regular study permit stream.

Important Considerations for Students

Students planning to study in Canada should:

  • Select a PGWP-eligible program at a DLI
  • Prepare financial and academic documents early
  • Understand provincial and federal requirements
  • Plan for post-graduation work and immigration options
